How to make it through January

10 years ago I started this January list on social media to get myself through January (a historically dark month for anyone with mental health issues).

It’s cold, dark, and everyone is in kind of a darker mood in general.

The Christmas lights are down.

There is not much to look forward until spring.

So I started a January list. If you want to join in on it, write #funuary in your post so that I can rejoice in your completions of the mission. Ready, set, go!

The Funuary List

January 2: find the lyrics to a song you like and that puts you in a good mood and sing it out loud, no matter how it sounds. If you lack one: modern love by David Bowie is good!

January 3: make the most ridiculous hairdo you can think of, or put on a silly hat. Take a selfie, make it your profile pic for the day.

January 4: make a painting, it doesn’t matter what or on what, just paint.

January 5: dress like your favourite tv character for a day.

January 6: call someone on Skype/Teams etc and have coffee with them.

January 7: play a video game or board game!

January 8: have a cup of coffee/tea outdoors

January 9: look up the lowest rated movies on IMDb, make predictions about their plot and ending without watching any of them, rate how accurate your were. Film and post to friends if you think you might have some fun comments.

January 10: visit cleverbot and have a deep conversation, post the fun bits.

January 11: watch a lecture online through edX, TED or YouTube

January 12: bake a cake, put too much decorations on it

January 13: find a 90s workout video, join in on the fun

January 14: get takeout and eat it in bed

January 15: put on a summer movie, put on swimwear and pretend you’re on the beach, have snacks that match the occasion

January 16: write a short stand up act, preform it

January 17: eat something you’ve never eaten before

January 18: write a short story about your day, make up as much as you want

January 19: look up a dance instruction video and dance as good as you can

January 20: refurnish a room, even if it’s just moving one furniture

January 21: take a candle lit shower or bath

January 22: write a poem

January 23: put on a ridiculous outfit, take a selfie make it your profile pic for the day

January 24: watch a movie from the year 1982, 1994 or 2006

January 25: close your eyes, pick four random items from your refrigerator and make a meal

January 26: play cards, learn a new card game

January 27: Find an experiment you can do with household items

January 28: find a famous portrait and recreate it as a selfie, post as profile pic for the day

January 29: film your self singing and make it in to a choir

January 30: make up a holiday, create a card and send it to someone

January 31: make a fruit salad, whip some cream and eat to celebrate that you made it through January
